Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are no longer just about tariff reductions—they are strategic tools shaping India’s role in global trade.  On the market front, FTAs lower trade costs, simplify customs, and open doors for sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and agri-tech. Indian businesses gain faster access to international markets, while consumers enjoy greater product variety.  From a policy perspective, FTAs push India toward modernization—digital compliance, streamlined quality checks, and regulatory reforms. Yet, policymakers face the challenge of balancing openness with domestic industry protection, ensuring local manufacturers remain competitive.  In terms of export-import dynamics, FTAs expand India’s export reach, especially in Asia and Europe, while also increasing imports of advanced technology and raw materials. This dual flow strengthens competitiveness but requires careful management to avoid widening trade deficits. Should India go bilateral or multilateral with FTAs?
